Tulum airport adds eight summer flights: what it means for travelers in the south
Quintana Roo's government confirmed expanded operations at Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport for the 2026 vacation season.
Tulum's Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport will add eight extra flights during the 2026 summer vacation season, according to a bulletin from Quintana Roo's General Communications Office. The expansion is meant to strengthen regional connectivity right as the Mexican Caribbean's most important vacation window begins.
What changes for passengers
The terminal, inaugurated in late 2023, had been gradually adding operations. These eight new frequencies —the state government has not yet detailed whether they are domestic, international or a mix— increase seat supply to and from the south of the state exactly when hotel occupancy in Tulum, Bacalar and the Maya Zone tends to spike.
For residents of Cancun or Playa del Carmen who want to fly to Mexico City, Monterrey or Guadalajara, having more options out of Tulum can ease pressure on Cancun International Airport, one of Mexico's busiest during summer. The road distance between Cancun and Tulum is about 130 kilometers; in moderate traffic, it is a two-hour drive.
How to plan before buying a ticket
- Compare fares across airlines already operating from Tulum: Viva, Volaris, Aeromexico, Mexicana and several international operators.
- Factor in ground transport time and cost from Cancun (ADO bus, shared van or own car) when budgeting your trip.
- Check the new flight schedules on the airport's official site and travel search engines before booking.
Context
The federal government projected in 2024 that the Tulum terminal would handle at least five million passengers a year in its initial phase. Consolidating routes is part of a broader plan to decentralize air traffic in the Peninsula and ease the load on Cancun's terminal.
