Kukulcán interchange in Cancún reaches 30% completion
Governor Mara Lezama toured the site at the entrance to the Hotel Zone; drivers still face lane closures and detours on Bonampak and Kukulcán.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa toured the Kukulcán road interchange construction site, which has reached 30% physical progress, her communications team reported. The project sits at the junction of Boulevard Kukulcán with Bonampak and Cobá avenues, one of the historic bottlenecks for entering and leaving Cancún's Hotel Zone.
The interchange was announced as a project to cut commute times for tourism workers and residents of the northern and central supermanzanas who cross daily toward hotels, restaurants and shops in the Hotel Zone. Once finished, it is expected to remove the current signalized crossing, which today can back up traffic for as much as a kilometer during peak hours.
What it means for drivers now
While the works continue, traffic in the area still faces lane reductions, temporary detours and nighttime works. These are useful alternate routes depending on your destination:
- Toward Punta Cancún and Playa Delfines: Bonampak Avenue to Boulevard Kukulcán, avoiding the Cobá crossing at peak times (7:00-9:00 a.m. and 5:00-8:00 p.m.).
- To leave the Hotel Zone toward downtown: take Cobá directly to Tulum before 8:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m. to skip the worst delays.
- Public transit: R-1 and R-2 buses continue their usual stops toward the Hotel Zone but run 10 to 15 minutes late due to closures.
Complaints and reports
The state Public Works Secretariat has a citizen service window for reporting damaged surrounding pavement, insufficient signage or incidents near the works. Reports can be filed at 072 for municipal streets and 911 in case of a traffic emergency.
The Kukulcán interchange is part of a package of road projects promised by the state government for northern Quintana Roo, along with the widening of the Cancún-Tulum highway. The official statement did not yet include a completion date or investment amount; noticiascancun.com will follow up.
