Civil Protection expects 25 to 50 mm of rain and wind gusts up to 60 km/h. The advisory runs until 6 a.m. tomorrow.

Cloudy sky with rain over the Quintana Roo coast

The State Civil Protection Coordination (COEPROC) issued its weather bulletin, valid from 6:00 a.m. on July 10 to 6:00 a.m. on July 11, warning that tropical wave number 18 is approaching the Yucatán Peninsula.

According to the bulletin, the wave's movement combined with moisture coming in from the Caribbean Sea will bring partly cloudy skies with intervals of showers and locally heavy rain accompanied by lightning, with accumulations of 25 to 50 millimeters.

Heat and rain on the same day

For Benito Juárez, the municipality Cancún belongs to, COEPROC forecasts highs of 36 to 38 degrees Celsius and lows of 25 to 27. In neighboring municipalities highs range from 32 to 39 degrees: Isla Mujeres and Lázaro Cárdenas would see the highest values (37 to 39) and Cozumel the lowest (32 to 34).

Winds will blow from the east and southeast at 15 to 35 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, mainly along the coast. Waves are estimated between 1.0 and 2.0 meters, and 3 to 6 feet in the Yucatán Channel.

The agency noted there are no active tropical cyclones in the Caribbean.

What Civil Protection recommends

Given the mix of heat and rain, COEPROC asked residents to:

  • Stay hydrated consistently and generously.
  • Avoid intense physical activity under the sun.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Take extra care with fog banks overnight and before dawn.
  • Check with the Port Captaincies before any maritime activity.
  • Stay cautious when boating or doing water activities.

The bulletin is updated daily. Civil Protection advised following its official channels for forecast changes as the tropical wave moves across the peninsula.
