Summer break begins in Quintana Roo: 338,000 students out until classes resume August 31

The school year ended July 15 for 2,367 basic education schools; the state education ministry announced permanent security at campuses and renovation work over the summer.

Quintana Roo basic education students head out for summer break

A total of 338,484 basic education students in Quintana Roo began their summer break after the school year ended on Tuesday, July 15, the state Education Ministry (SEQ) reported. Classes resume Monday, August 31, 2026, when the new school year begins.

The break covers 2,367 public schools —preschool, primary and secondary— across the state, employing 16,571 teachers. SEQ head Elda Xix Euán said construction and renovation work will continue at schools over the summer, aiming to improve conditions before students return.

School security over the summer

To prevent theft and vandalism —a recurring problem at Cancún campuses every vacation period— the SEQ said permanent security guards will be stationed at preschools, primary and secondary schools, and that it will work with Social Participation Councils and parents' associations to monitor campuses and immediately report any incident.

If you live near a school and spot strangers inside the campus during the break, you can report it to 911; follow-up with education authorities runs through the school's administration or the SEQ regional office.

Dates and to-dos for parents

  • Back to school: Monday, August 31, 2026. Worth marking now — the break runs nearly seven weeks, longer than the usual six.
  • If your child is changing schools or municipalities, the vacation period is the time to request the transfer certificate from the current school's administration before offices close for the summer.
  • New-enrollment assignment results and registration details are published on official SEQ channels; keep the pre-registration folio from February.
  • For kids staying home, the Benito Juárez city government runs the rotating 'Safe Summer in Your Neighborhood' program across supermanzanas; information at the municipal line 072.

Teachers also begin their vacation with the end of the school year, though SEQ administrative offices keep skeleton staff for urgent paperwork through July and August.
