INEGI: minimum basket to escape income poverty fell 1.7% in urban areas in June

Monthly cost per person in Mexican cities came in at 4,888.22 pesos and at 3,503.97 in rural areas; an urban family of four needed 19,522.88 pesos to cross the income poverty line.

Mexico's National Statistics Institute (INEGI) reported that the cost of the minimum basket a person needs to cross the income poverty line fell during June 2026 in both urban and rural areas. The update was published on July 14.

According to the report, one person in an urban area needed 4,888.22 pesos a month to cover food and other basic goods, 1.7 percent below May. In rural areas the figure was 3,503.97 pesos, a monthly drop of 2.7 percent. For a four-person household, the monthly reference was 19,522.88 pesos in cities and 14,015.88 in rural settings.

INEGI attributed the moderation to lower prices for fruits, vegetables and some animal-based products during the month. Even with the monthly decline, the values remain above those seen in June 2025.

What it means for families in Cancun

Cancun and the rest of the metropolitan Peninsula are classified as urban, so the applicable reference is 4,888.22 pesos per person per month. For a typical four-person household —two adults and two minors— the income welfare line requires roughly 19,500 pesos a month just for food and basic goods, before rent, transport, digital services and schooling.

In a tourism-driven economy like Quintana Roo's, where hourly work, tips and seasonal jobs are common, this figure is a useful benchmark for households to see at what point their monthly income crosses the statistical income-poverty threshold.

Where to check the official figures

  • The monthly update of urban and rural values is published on INEGI's portal, under the National Consumer Price Index section (inegi.org.mx/temas/inpc/).
  • The income poverty lines compared against household income are also published by INEGI under the approved methodology, in the income poverty lines section.
  • The comparison can be reviewed month over month to follow the cost of living in each type of locality.
