Over 100 tons of trash cleared from illegal dumps in Cancun: here's how to report one via WhatsApp
SIRESOL cleaned sites in supermanzanas 200, 256, 50 and 247, and on Chichén Itzá Avenue. Residents can report illegal dumps via WhatsApp at 998 353 2990.
Crews from SIRESOL, Cancun's solid waste agency, removed more than 100 tons of accumulated trash from illegal dumps across several neighborhoods, the Benito Juárez municipal government reported on July 17, urging residents to report dump sites to the Green Units' WhatsApp line: 998 353 2990.
According to the municipal report, overseen by Landy Guadalupe Canché Pantoja, acting head of the municipal government, the cleanups included:
- Supermanzana 200 (51st Street at 46th Street): 97 tons of waste removed.
- Chichén Itzá Avenue at 80th Street: 7 tons of debris and 42 tires.
- Supermanzana 256 (Prado Norte): 60 cubic meters of trash piled up in a park.
- Supermanzana 50: cleanup of San Ángel and Halacho parks.
- Supermanzana 247 (Villas Otoch): unclogging of absorption wells.
Why this matters right now
Clearing absorption wells is no small detail: Cancun lacks citywide storm drainage, and much of its rainwater filters into the ground through these wells. When they're clogged with trash, water stays on the street and creates the flooding that leaves avenues impassable every rainy season. With state Civil Protection forecasting rain and showers these days due to moisture moving in from the Caribbean, a clean absorption well on your block makes a direct difference.
How to report an illegal dump
- Send a message to the Green Units' WhatsApp: 998 353 2990.
- Provide the exact location (street, supermanzana or a landmark) and attach a photo if possible.
- Report repeat offenses too: city hall specifically asked residents to keep reports coming and watch that trash doesn't pile up again after a cleanup.
Keep in mind that dumping rubble, tires or furniture on public streets is how these sites typically start — one abandoned mattress often becomes a mountain of garbage within weeks. For bulky waste, contact SIRESOL before putting items out on the street.
