Cancún's Technical Secondary 21 in Región 94 gets a schoolyard dome after 30 years

The project benefits 672 students across both shifts, cost more than 3.3 million pesos and is part of a state plan for 1,109 covered spaces across Quintana Roo.

The 'Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta' Technical Secondary School 21, in Cancún's Región 94, opened a new dome over its schoolyard on Monday, after more than three decades without a cover to shield students from sun and rain. The project benefits 672 students across the morning and afternoon shifts, according to the Quintana Roo state government.

The investment topped 3.3 million pesos and covered not only the dome's metal frame but also LED lighting, a full resurfacing of the court, new basketball hoops and complementary work. Governor Mara Lezama delivered the project in person.

The project is part of a state plan that will build 1,109 covered structures at schools and public spaces across Quintana Roo. Context: northern Cancún —where Región 94 sits— endures the hottest days and heaviest tropical rains of the year in June and July, and an uncovered court simply shuts down when it rains or when the sun turns the concrete unbearable.

What it means for families

SEQ technical schools run workshops —carpentry, computing, technical drawing— alongside the regular curriculum. A covered space lets them schedule flag ceremonies, PE and sports evaluations regardless of the weather. For parents, it means one less hour of extreme heat —or of getting soaked— when picking up their kids.

How to request a dome if your school still has none

  • The formal request is filed by the parents' association to the Quintana Roo Education Ministry (SEQ), with the committee's charter, up-to-date enrollment and the principal's signature.
  • Upcoming covers are chosen based on enrollment size, building condition and how long the request has been pending.
  • Parents and school staff can check on their application at SEQ regional offices or through the school administration.

The dome is delivered a few days before the summer courses and activities offered by the city government and DIF in Cancún's neighborhoods begin.
